Using the tool

ScrubLocally is free to use, for personal and commercial work alike, with no account and no usage limit. You do not need permission to use it inside a company.

No warranty of completeness

The detectors are pattern-based. They will miss personal data — names they have never seen, identifiers with no label, and above all information that identifies someone by context rather than by pattern. They will occasionally flag something that is not personal data at all. The tool highlights its matches precisely so you can check its work, and that check is your responsibility: you are expected to read the output before you paste it anywhere.

The software is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss arising from its use — including disclosure of data the detectors did not catch.

Not legal, medical or compliance advice

Pages on this site describe rules such as HIPAA’s Safe Harbor method, FERPA’s de-identification test, GDPR concepts and professional-conduct guidance, with sources and dates. That is general information, not advice about your situation, and it may be out of date by the time you read it. Whether a particular document may be shared with a particular AI service is a decision for you and your advisers.

Acceptable use

Do not use this tool to help conceal wrongdoing, obstruct a lawful investigation, or evade an obligation to preserve or produce records. Redaction that hides evidence is not redaction, and nothing here should be read as encouraging it.

Availability

The site is provided as a free service with no uptime commitment. Because everything runs in your browser, a previously loaded page keeps working even when the site is unreachable.
